Reflections with Roger Pearce

05 September 2025: In Proverbs 13:22, it says, “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children”. You're not a good man BECAUSE you leave an inheritance for your children. Doing good deeds doesn't make us good; only Jesus makes us good. But if we have truly been touched by Christ, if, like Bishop Brett talked about in our recent Leaders’ Conference, we are living in the place of immense gratitude and transformation because of His mercy and grace, we are good men and good women.

And, if we are good men and good women, then it's seen in the way we live. We live in such a way that everything we do passes things on to other people. We live seeing it as an immense privilege to leave stuff to people. Our understanding of our richness in God calls upon us, and causes us, to leave an inheritance, which comes in so many forms. It's habits, it's patterns, it's wealth, it's churches.

And we leave it to our children's children, living with a knowledge of generations. What we're doing isn't for us, and it's not even for our children. It's for our children's children. We live with a grand vision to leave things, to pass things on, to the next generation and to the generation after that. There are many people who pass things on just to one generation just after them. But if we have truly done our task, then what we're doing touches many generations.

So may we be these good men and good women who, because we've been touched by Christ, because we've received love and mercy, live in a way of great generosity.
